The cola, or terminal bud, is a cluster of buds forming the flowering structure of the female cannabis plant found at the top of the plant or at the end of major branches.
Cannabis cultivators can increase a plant's yield by "training" the plant, using trimming methods, to produce more colas.
Many of those who consume cannabis are familiar with the bud, or calyx, of the plant. The calyx is the individual, small flowering structure that collectively make up the cola.
Trichomes, the tiny resin producing hair-like structures, are primarily found covering the calyxes.
Cannabinoids and terpenes, the molecules that together produce the medicinal properties and euphoric or relaxing highs, are produced by tiny resin glands called trichomes.
Trichomes are mainly found on the calyx of the mature cannabis plant, but can be found to a lesser extent on the fan leaves. While many cannabis products utilize the entire
flower, a growing number of applications are being produced using only the extracted resin itself!
Being the female reproductive structures of the cannabis plant, the calyxes each contain a pistil. The pistil's function is to receive pollen from the male plant, and transport
the pollen to the ovum in order to produce a seed.
While the flowers and their various structures are the most commonly utilized portion of the cannabis plant, perhaps the most recognizable structures are the fan leaves.
Each individual fan leaf is made up of five (or even seven or nine) smaller leaves. Because the fan leaves can contain a small amount of resin-producing trichomes, they
can be useful in the production of various extracts and edibles.
